Mateus de Sousa van Stralen is an architect, researcher, and educator whose work navigates between theory and practice. A graduate of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (2005), where he also earned his master’s (2009) and doctoral (2017) degrees in Architecture, he develops work at the intersection of computational design, second-order cybernetics, and citizen participation.

As an architect, he designs residential and public buildings, exploring the relationships between space, user, and technology. He is the director of Kubus4D, a company specializing in architectural visualization, interactive sales interfaces, and virtual and augmented reality, where he develops computing systems applied to architecture and the real estate market.

In academia, he has been an adjunct professor at UFMG since 2015. He is part of the Design Department and acts as a researcher in the LAGEAR (Graphics Laboratory for Architectural Experimentation) and NEXT (Nucleus for Experimentation in Digital Technologies) laboratories, investigating the use of digital technologies for teaching, learning, and design.

On the international stage, he is a member of the Executive Board of the American Society for Cybernetics (ASC), where he is involved with the ASC Speaker Series. He is a member of the Systemic Design Association and serves as a peer reviewer for journals such as Kybernetes (UK), Constructivist Foundations, and Technoetic Arts.

His research explores dynamic architectural systems through parametric design and digital fabrication, investigating circular design processes that integrate users and the environment in continuous conversations. He works with immersive technologies, interactive architecture, participatory urban planning, and the application of cybernetic principles to design and democratic governance.
